Some key dive sites are:
Laje dos Irmaos
Descending to the sandy bottom at a 70-foot depth is a field of mountainous star coral. Here, on the main island´s west side are two rocky outcroppings frequented by juvenile and oh, so curious gray reef sharks. Although, it is common to find 14 species of sharks in this area at one time it is the gray reef shark that has taken over the area and claimed it as their breeding ground.
Wreck of Ipiranga
The wreck of the Ipiranga is an advanced diver´s playground. The Ipiranga was a small Brazilian Navy destroyer that sank in the 1980´s from striking the rocks within the Marine Reserve. It is now one of the most pristine wrecks as it lies upright and completely intact with uniforms still hanging in closets. This dive goes down to beyond 175 feet and is reserved for advanced divers.
Caverna da Sapata
An easily accessible cave, large comparable to that of a ballroom. Surrounded by large fish and sponges, the ocean floor reaches down to 92 feet. The cave is divided by numerous corridors and many a large fish also come into the ballroom looking for the party.
The archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, a spectacular group of 21 islands, is Brazil’s closest spot to Paradise. Lying 200 miles away from the north east coast of the country, Noronha concentrates places of unrivalled beauty and tranquillity. On top of that, Noronha is a rare place where preserving the environment is the foremost concern for its inhabitants. Part of the archipelago forms the Maritime National Park of Fernando de Noronha. It is one of the best scuba diving locations in South America. With visibilities of up to 120 feet, beautiful blue water, and an amazing array of marine life, it is the biggest scuba destination in Brazil, though still relatively unknown by North America. Noronha is also considered one of the the best waves in Brazil and rivals a lot of good tubes in the world. The surf season is short, November through March, but you are almost sure to catch great waves if you go at that time. If you want to experience something new with great chances for scuba diving or surfing free from crowds, you should definitely discover Fernando de Noronha.
