LA PUNTA
The point known as La Punta in Montanita is a right wave, break point wave located half a mile from the center of Montanita. Fast, strong and sometimes long, it is one of the most respected waves in Ecuador. If the conditions are good, with a big north swell, not too much wind, the wave can get 10 feet tall, with some nice and perfect barrelling sections. This wave is for intermediate and advanced surf level; the bottom is reef and the end of wave is sandy.
La FAE
Located 44 miles south of Montanita, at Salinas, this left is sensitive to any swell, is one of the favorites waves for Guayaquil surfers. You required to have an special permission to get in this area; it belongs to the Military Force of Ecuador.
LAS TUNAS/ AYAMPE
Located 15 miles north from Montanita, both are beach breaks that can work almost every day on every season, and can get really good with favorable conditions of wind and swell. With lefts and rights, they are a good alternative when at Montanita there are no waves or swell. Las Tunas or Ayampe will always offer you good waves to have fun.
Over the years Montanita in Ecuador has developed from a small fishing village to a surf party town. It has become a very fun and laid back spot with a variety of local shops, bars and restaurants .The water temperature is usually in the low eighties and it’s sunny almost everyday. The surf is good year round but the best season is from December through May.At this time of year the surf gets big and glassy and Ecuador gets both north and south swells. There are not very strong currents so this is truly a surfing paradise with light crowds,warm water, no currents and great surf. Montanita offers good conditions for both: the hardcore surfer who wants to get up early and score some insane right hand barrels and those who just want to party at town until dawn. Montanita is truly ideal for surfers who like mixing with cool locals and tons of foreigners in a surf party atmosphere, great surf and fun guaranteed!
